It is more than just the woodpeckers! Some birds adopt an existing hole to be their nest instead of excavating their own. This makes them a secondary cavity-nester.<\/p>\n<p>The ones you\u2019re most likely to find in your yard are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ash-throated Flycatcher<\/li>\n<li>Brown-crested Flycatcher<\/li>\n<li>Lucy\u2019s Warbler<\/li>\n<li>Bewick\u2019s Wren<\/li>\n<li>American Kestrel<\/li>\n<li>Western Screech-Owl<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These birds, like many others, are suffering from habitat loss. The lack of mature trees means\u00a0fewer nesting cavities for them to use for breeding. You can help!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adopt or construct a nest box specific to the bird you want to help!<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/tucsonaudubon.org\/our-work\/conserving-birds\/citizen-science\/desert-nest-boxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here<\/a> for plans and instructions for creating your own nest box.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tucsonaudubon.org\/nature-shop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here<\/a> for our Nature Shops information where you can\u00a0buy your new nest box.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A few tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Make sure to place your new boxes by February so they get noticed by the early spring arrivals.<\/p>\n<p>Refer to the species-specific placement instructions to know exactly where to place your nest box. Each bird species will have variations in surrounding habitat preference, height off the ground, direction etc.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your cats inside. Cats are curious and agile creatures\u00a0that pose a great\u00a0threat to both adults and chicks.<\/p>\n<p>Provide adequate water as well as plants for food and shelter.
